Fractions practice that matches your child's homework

Easy Twin turns a fractions worksheet into a twin that practices the same skills, like equivalent fractions, mixed numbers, and adding with unlike denominators, using new numbers. It's for parents of kids in about 3rd through 6th grade, and in-app grading accepts fractions, mixed numbers, and equivalent decimals.

What fraction skills do kids practice, and in which grades?

Fractions are usually introduced in 3rd grade, after kids split shapes into halves and fourths in 1st and 2nd grade. They build through equivalence and comparing in 3rd and 4th grade, adding and subtracting with unlike denominators in 5th, and dividing fractions in 6th. A common sequence:

  • 3rd grade: unit fractions like 1/4, fractions on a number line, simple equivalents (1/2 = 2/4), and comparing fractions with the same top or bottom number.
  • 4th grade: equivalent fractions, comparing fractions with different denominators, adding and subtracting like denominators, mixed numbers, whole number × fraction, and tenths and hundredths as decimals.
  • 5th grade: adding and subtracting unlike denominators, multiplying fractions, dividing unit fractions and whole numbers, and seeing a fraction as division.
  • 6th grade: dividing a fraction by a fraction, and fractions inside ratios.

Your school's order may differ. Fraction work also shows up in math word problems about recipes, distances, and sharing.

Why does varied practice help with fractions?

Varied practice helps because fractions reward understanding more than any single procedure. A child who has memorized "find a common denominator" may do it for multiplication too, where it isn't needed. A child who adds tops and bottoms (1/3 + 1/4 = 2/7) may get lucky on a sheet of like denominators and never notice the problem.

New numbers catch these habits. When a twin swaps 3/4 for 2/5 or 1/3 + 1/4 for 1/2 + 1/5, your child has to reason about the size of the pieces again instead of reusing remembered answers.

It also helps to meet the same idea in different forms. Equivalence can appear as a fill-in (3/4 = ___/12), a number line, or a word problem about pizza. A twin keeps the form of each original question but changes the details, so your child practices what the teacher assigned without seeing a repeat.

What fraction mistakes do parents see most?

Adding the denominators

A child writes 1/3 + 1/4 = 2/7. Ask whether the answer should be bigger or smaller than 1/3; 2/7 is smaller, so something went wrong. Then rename both fractions as twelfths so the pieces are the same size.

Thinking a bigger denominator means a bigger fraction

A child says 1/8 is more than 1/4 because 8 is more than 4. Talk about fair shares: a pizza cut for 8 people gives smaller slices than one cut for 4. A number line from 0 to 1 makes this visible.

Changing only one number in an equivalent fraction

For 3/4 = ___/12, a child writes 3/12. Show that the bottom was multiplied by 3, so the top must be too: 9/12. Whatever you do to one, do to the other.

Mixing up the rules for each operation

Kids find common denominators to multiply, or multiply straight across to add. Have your child name the operation before starting, and practice sheets that mix operations so they have to choose.

Converting mixed numbers the wrong way

A child turns 2 3/4 into 5/4 by adding 2 + 3. Remind them that 2 wholes are 8 fourths, so 2 3/4 is 8/4 + 3/4, or 11/4.

How do I use Easy Twin for fractions homework?

Scan the fractions worksheet, then let your child solve the twin in the app or on paper.

  • Type fractions the natural way. In interactive practice, your child types 3/4, or a mixed number with a space, like 1 1/2. Grading accepts equivalent number forms, so 1.5 counts for 1 1/2 and 0.75 counts for 3/4, and trailing units like "2 cups" are ignored. Answers are compared by value, so an unsimplified 6/8 is also accepted for 3/4. If your child's teacher requires simplest form, check that on paper too.
  • Number lines are drawn. A number line question gets its own new number line with different marks. Pie and bar pictures become a one-sentence word picture, such as "a rectangle split into 8 equal parts with 3 shaded", and a visual never gives away the answer.
  • Print for multi-step work. Common denominators and mixed-number conversions take room. Printable twin worksheets include "Show your work" space and an optional answer key.

Each twin question has two hints (an idea first, then a concrete first step) and 2–5 worked steps, shown on the summary screen under "Show me how". Learn more about how twin worksheets are made and how to scan a worksheet.

Which grades practice fractions?

Frequently asked questions

How does my child type a fraction or mixed number in the app?

Your child types a fraction with a slash, like 3/4, and a mixed number with a space, like 1 1/2. Easy Twin's grading reads both forms.

Will a decimal answer count on a fractions question?

Yes, number answers accept equivalent forms, so 0.5 is accepted for 1/2 and 1.5 for 1 1/2. If the homework asks for a fraction specifically, encourage your child to practice writing it that way too.

What happens to fraction pictures like pies and fraction bars?

Pie and bar pictures become a one-sentence word picture with new numbers. Number lines are drawn as real visuals in the app and on the printed PDF.

Can Easy Twin make practice for dividing fractions?

Yes, Easy Twin covers math worksheets from kindergarten through 8th grade, including 6th grade fraction division. Each twin question keeps the same skill and difficulty as the original.

What if the fractions homework mixes different operations?

The twin mixes them the same way. It writes one new question per original, in the same order, so a sheet that alternates adding and multiplying fractions gets a twin that does too.
