Addition and subtraction practice that matches your child's homework
Easy Twin turns an addition or subtraction worksheet into a twin that practices the same skills, like facts to 20 or regrouping, with new numbers and stories. It's built for parents of kids in kindergarten through 4th grade, and the twin can be printed or solved on iPhone or iPad.
What addition and subtraction skills do kids practice, and in which grades?
Kids usually work on addition and subtraction from kindergarten through about 4th grade, moving from counting objects to multi-digit problems with regrouping. Exact timing depends on your school's curriculum, but a typical path looks like this:
- Kindergarten: adding and taking away within 10 with objects, fingers, or pictures; finding the number that makes 10.
- 1st grade: facts within 20, missing-number problems like 8 + ___ = 13, adding and subtracting tens, and simple story problems.
- 2nd grade: 2-digit addition and subtraction with and without regrouping, quick recall of facts within 20, and number lines.
- 3rd grade: adding and subtracting within 1,000, and rounding to estimate whether an answer makes sense.
- 4th grade: multi-digit numbers with the standard written method.
Along the way kids meet fact families (3 + 5 = 8, 8 − 5 = 3), checking subtraction with addition, and story problems about joining, taking apart, and comparing. Word problems get their own guide: math word problems for kids.

Why does varied practice help with addition and subtraction?
Varied practice helps because facts and regrouping stick when a child works them out with numbers they haven't seen before. If your child redoes last night's sheet, they may recall that 7 + 8 was 15 without really knowing it; a twin with 6 + 9 asks the question fresh.
Mixing problem types matters too. A worksheet where some problems need regrouping and some don't makes a child stop and check which is which, rather than regrouping every time or never. Twin worksheets keep that mix, because each twin question practices the same skill as the original it mirrors.
Changing the story helps with word problems. When "Maya gave away stickers" becomes "Leo gave away apples", your child has to read for meaning instead of recognizing a familiar sentence. Short, regular practice on new problems tends to feel less like a punishment than doing the same page again.
What addition and subtraction mistakes do parents see most?
Subtracting the smaller digit from the bigger one
For 52 − 17, a child does 7 − 2 in the ones place and writes 45 instead of 35. Before each column, ask "Is there enough on top to take away?" If not, talk it through as trading one ten for ten ones.
Forgetting the regrouped ten
For 38 + 47, a child adds 8 + 7 = 15, writes the 5, and never adds the extra ten, getting 75 instead of 85. Have your child write a small 1 above the tens column, and estimate first: about 40 + 50 is 90, so 75 is too small.
Getting stuck when regrouping across a zero
Problems like 400 − 136 trip kids up because there are no tens to trade. Show that 400 is 39 tens and 10 ones, or 3 hundreds, 9 tens, and 10 ones, then subtract column by column.
Counting on from the wrong number
For 8 + 3, a child counts "8, 9, 10" and answers 10. Have them hold 8 in their head and count three more starting at 9, or hop along a number line.
Adding whenever they see "more"
In "Ana has 12 shells. That's 5 more than Ben. How many does Ben have?" the answer is 7, not 17. Ask your child who has more, then act it out or draw it before choosing the operation.
How do I use Easy Twin for addition and subtraction homework?
Scan the homework page, and Easy Twin writes a matching twin you can print or solve in the app.
- Scan it, even if it's already filled in. When you scan a worksheet, handwritten answers and teacher marks are ignored; only the printed questions are read.
- Expect the same format. A number line question gets a new number line with new numbers, and a question about a picture of ducks gets a one-sentence word picture with different animals. A visual never gives away the answer. Learn more about how twin worksheets are made.
- Use the app for facts. Interactive practice has a number keypad that suits fact practice, 3 tries per question, and two hints. Typing "12 ducks" counts the same as 12. Five correct in a row with no hints earns the Sharp Shooter badge, one of the practice badges and rewards.
- Print for multi-digit work. Vertical problems with regrouping are easier on paper. Printable twin worksheets include "Show your work" space and an optional answer key.
For younger children, a grown-up may need to read the questions aloud. You can also add your child's first name in Settings so it may appear in word problems.

Frequently asked questions
Can Easy Twin make addition practice for kindergarten?
Yes, Easy Twin works with worksheets from kindergarten through 8th grade, including early addition within 10. Younger kids may need a grown-up to read the questions, and printing the twin often works well at this age.
If the original problems had regrouping, will the twin problems too?
Yes, each twin question practices the same skill at the same difficulty, so a "2-digit addition with regrouping" question gets a new problem that also needs regrouping.
Can my child show their work in the app?
Interactive practice checks your child's final answer; for written work, print the twin. The PDF includes "Show your work" space under each question.
Will my child be marked wrong for typing "12 ducks" instead of 12?
No, grading ignores trailing units, so "12 ducks" and 12 are both accepted. It also ignores extra spaces and capitalization.
How many problems will the twin worksheet have?
The twin has one new question for every printed question Easy Twin can read on the page, in the same order, with no cap on the number of questions.
