Plural nouns: rules and practice for your child

A plural noun names more than one thing: cats, boxes, babies, mice. Kids start with adding -s in 1st grade and work through the trickier -es, -ies, -ves and irregular plurals in 2nd and 3rd grade, so most plural mistakes come down to a handful of rules.

What is a plural noun?

A plural noun names more than one person, place, thing or animal. "Dog" is singular; "dogs" is plural. Most nouns just add -s, but English has several spelling rules and a list of irregular words, which is why plural nouns show up on homework for a few years in a row.

In most schools, 1st graders practice adding -s and -es, 2nd graders learn common irregular plurals like children, feet and mice, and 3rd graders are expected to use regular and irregular plurals correctly in their writing. For more on the grammar kids practice by grade, see the grammar topic guide.

What are the plural noun rules?

These five rules cover almost every plural on an elementary worksheet:

RuleExample
Most nouns: add -scat → cats, book → books
Ends in s, x, z, ch or sh: add -esbox → boxes, dish → dishes, bus → buses
Consonant + y: change y to i, add -esbaby → babies, city → cities
Vowel + y: just add -skey → keys, toy → toys
Many words ending in f or fe: change to -vesleaf → leaves, knife → knives

Then there are irregular plurals that follow no rule and simply have to be learned: child → children, man → men, woman → women, mouse → mice, tooth → teeth, foot → feet, goose → geese. A few words stay the same: sheep, deer, fish.

What plural nouns mistakes do kids make most?

Adding just -s after s, x, ch or sh

Kids write boxs or wishs. Have your child say the plural out loud: "boxes" has an extra syllable you can hear, and that extra sound is the -es.

Mixing up the y rules

A child writes babys, or overcorrects to keies. The question to ask is "What letter comes right before the y?" A consonant (bab-y) means change to -ies; a vowel (ke-y) means just add -s.

Treating irregular plurals as regular

Mouses, childs and foots are signs your child knows the main rule and is applying it everywhere, which is a good sign. Keep a short list of irregular plurals on the fridge and practice three of them at a time.

How can you practice plural nouns at home in 10 minutes?

Keep it quick and mixed, so your child has to think about which rule applies each time.

  • Minutes 1–3: sort it. Write ten singular words on scraps of paper (fox, puppy, leaf, book, wish, key, mouse, bench, city, tooth) and have your child sort them into piles by rule.
  • Minutes 4–7: write the plurals. Your child writes the plural of each word. Check together using the rules table.
  • Minutes 8–10: use them in sentences. Pick the three trickiest words and have your child say or write a sentence with each plural ("Two mice ran under the benches.").

Next time, use new words that follow the same rules, so your child practices the rule instead of memorizing a list.

Frequently asked questions

What grade learns plural nouns?

Kids start adding -s and -es in 1st grade, learn common irregular plurals like children, feet and mice in 2nd grade, and are expected to use regular and irregular plurals correctly in their own writing by 3rd grade.

How do you teach plural nouns with -es?

Teach the sound first: words ending in s, x, z, ch or sh get an extra syllable when you say the plural (box, boxes). If you can hear the extra syllable, you write -es.

What are irregular plural nouns?

They're plurals that don't follow a spelling rule, like child/children, man/men, mouse/mice, tooth/teeth, foot/feet and goose/geese. Some words, like sheep and deer, are the same in the singular and plural.

Is it 'roofs' or 'rooves'?

Use roofs. Many f words change to -ves (leaf, leaves), but some just add -s, including roof, chief and chef, so it's worth checking a dictionary when you're unsure.
